School systems create Acceptable Use Policies so that students will use technology correctly, follow security protocol, and pay attention to copyright when using school provided equipment or internet access. When students sign this document, they are agreeing to follow the constraints and guidelines set forth by the school system. The Acceptable Use Policy will usually include expected behaviors in regards to hardware use, internet use, and any other networks a student may encounter.

For younger students, schools may ask them to sign an Acceptable Use Policy that encourages the proper handling of technology such as holding tablets with two hands and only going to approved programs and applications. They may also provide lessons in the classroom or computer lab to teach young students what is ok and not ok in regards to technology use.

For older students, an Acceptable Use Policy will also include accessing social media during the school day, and using school technology for non-school related reasons. With the increase in BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), an Acceptable Use Policy is truly a necessity.
